Emergency Department Consumer Advisory Group (Fiona Stanley Hospital)

Committed to improving the experiences of emergency department patients, families and carers

Emergency Department Consumer Advisory Group (Fiona Stanley Hospital)

The Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Emergency Department Consumer Advisory Group (ED CAG) works with emergency department (ED) staff to improve its services for patients, families, carers and visitors.

The group consists of 8 consumers embedded within the governance of the ED and 5 senior medical and nursing staff. Consumer members call on their own experiences as hospital emergency department patients, carers or community members to support ED service design and assess performance.

Established in 2016, it is the only emergency department consumer group in Australia. This innovative alliance won the 2019 SMHS Excellence Award for Excellence in Strengthening Partnerships and was a finalist in the 2023 WA Health Excellence Awards in the Excellence in Person-Centred Care category.

Projects

The group works on projects of its own choosing aimed at improving the experiences of emergency department patients, families and carers.

Next-of-kin information guide

Members of the ED CAG have written a Next-Of-Kin information guide (PDF 177KB) to help explain:

  • what next-of-kin means
  • why the hospital asks for details of a patient’s next-of-kin
  • what being someone’s next-of-kin involves.

Improving the triage experience

Visiting the ED can be stressful for patients, family members and carers. Based on their own experiences as ED patients, the group created a workshop presentation on person-centred care at triage. This has since been incorporated into the induction program for new triage nurses.

Improving the quality of care for patients in the ED

In collaboration with ED nursing staff, the group developed a series of education modules based on real-life experiences of patients, family members and carers to encourage ED staff to practise a person-centred approach to caring for all who visit.
