Martin over the ‘Moon’ for son and cancer treatment
Martin Meader, pictured conducting a choir, is being treated for colorectal cancer.
Diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer almost ten years ago, and losing his wife to brain cancer in 2023, Martin Meader is thrilled to be here to watch his son, Charlie Moon Meader, sing in the Australian Idol competition.
“I am so proud of Charlie, watching him sing to the whole country about his mum who we all miss so much was a special moment,” Martin said.
Martin has been receiving cancer treatment at Fiona Stanley Hospital Medical Oncology since December 2016, undergoing extensive chemotherapy and multiple surgeries.
With a background is in the arts, Martin credits his treatment at the hospital alongside his own active involvement in choral singing as a source of strength and longevity throughout his battle with cancer.
“The care I have received has been fantastic,” Martin said.
“Being involved choirs has helped too, as something I’ve done for over 20 years, I’ve enjoyed establishing choirs and performing around Perth to support others through singing.”
Fiona Stanley Hospital Medical Oncology Consultant Dr Tom Ferguson said Martin has kindly donated proceeds from two choral performances back to the hospital's Oncology Trials Unit.
“Martin had metastases to both the lungs and liver, and has undergone over 100 cycles of fortnightly chemotherapy, as well as bowel surgery, two separate liver resections, and courses of radiation therapy,” Dr Ferguson said.
“Despite all his treatments, Martin has still found time to bring his choir to the hospital to perform Christmas carols, which was warmly welcomed by other patients and staff.”
Martin said Charlie is now in the final ten of the competition – to vote for Charlie just SMS 'Charlie' to 0457 500 700.
