WA's heart health advanced with new appointment to Victor Chang Institute

Fiona Stanley Hospital Cardiologist, Prof Girish Dwivedi, has been announced as the newest faculty member of the prestigious Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (VCCRI).
This appointment acknowledges Prof Dwivedi’s national and international leadership in heart research, at Fiona Stanley Hospital and through his joint appointments at the Harry Perkins Institute for Medical Research and the University of Western Australia.
The role is part of a new strategic partnership between VCCRI and Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research to tackle heart disease across the nation.
Prof Dwivedi said he was thrilled to join the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, as an unparalleled beacon of excellence in heart research with ambitious goals for the future.
“Western Australia faces unique cardiac care challenges that demand innovative solutions. With a large landmass, many people live in remote areas with no access to specialized cardiac care, leading to increased mortality and morbidity rates.
“Furthermore, obesity and cardiometabolic diseases disproportionately affect Indigenous populations and culturally diverse communities across WA.
“While heart disease remains our nation’s biggest killer, the geography and demographics of Western Australia create particular urgency for revolutionary approaches to cardiac research and care, which our new partnership is uniquely positioned to address,” Prof Dwivedi said.
South Metropolitan Health Service A/Chief Executive Neil Doverty said, “We look forward to contributing our significant advances in clinical research to a national effort aimed at finding better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat heart disease - together.”
FSH Head of Cardiology, Sharad Shetty said, “While excellent research is already being conducted at FSH, the proposed collaboration with VCCRI will further enhance opportunities for local researchers to collaborate with one of Australia’s leading cardiac research institutions.
“This partnership will promote innovative research, foster new ideas, and strengthen the overall impact of our work in the field of cardiac research.”
VCCRI plans to further expand its laboratories and research facilities in Perth.
Professor Dwivedi will be Head of the VCCRI CardioInnovate Translational Lab - Western Australia.
